Project: Maui Tacos Restaurant
Product: Kemiko Acid Stain
Contractor: STS, Inc. Carmichael, CA
Internationally acclaimed Hawaiian chef and restaurateur, Mark Ellman first conceived of Maui Tacos from the lanai of his beachfront home in Maui. He went to work and in 1993 he opened the first MAUI TACOS® restaurant, in Napili, Maui. “I set out to create a restaurant fusing traditional Mexican fare with the exotic flavors from the Hawaiian Islands”. The successful result was MAUI TACOS®.
That first restaurant received rave reviews and was quickly followed by several more locations on Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island. For years Hawaiians, jet-setters, island hoppers and pro-surfers have brought legendary stories of MAUI TACOS® with them everywhere they have traveled and sure enough the concept was finally brought to the mainland in 1998. STS, Inc. ,an industry leader in coatings technology, was recommended for the project flooring because for their diversified coating techniques.
STS offers their customers many surface alternatives for their existing concrete surfaces such as; acid staining, opaque staining, logo etching, decorative concrete overlays and epoxy floor coatings. STS, Inc. was contracted to acid stain the floors of the new Maui Taco locations in Roseville and El Dorado, CA.. Prior to starting they met with the owners and reviewed the project, listing that not only could they provide the low maintenance floor finish they specified but could enhance the look by adding their logo along with footprints leading to the order counter, creating a one-of-a-kind custom look.
The concrete floors were cleaned and prepared to receive the acid stain. The Kemiko stain (Village Umber) was applied and allowed twenty-four hours to react with the concrete. The following the day the surface was cleaned and neutralized. Maui Taco logo was applied to the designated areas and colored. A protective sealant was applied in two-coat application to provide easy maintenance.
